[Under Construction]

You might think “the ordinary” would be boring. No. This Chicago poet
sees the ordinary as if through a kaleidoscope, panning his word camera
around so that what is in the background serves in stark contrast
to the narrator's object of focus, such as his panoramic view of a car wash
near Cabrini Green. Larry O. Dean totally releases himself, surrendering
to Freudian slips; for some reason I am tempted to compare his work to
a surfer riding a typo as if on a wave – with humorous, unexpected,
sometimes enjoyably morbid results.

Dean is a prolific poet, journalist and songwriter who fronts Chicago-based
band The Me Decade and records as a solo act. His tuneful, soulful, song-based
recordings suggest a cross between Big Star-era Alex Chilton and latter-day
Stephen Malkmus.
Nashville Scene

Exhibiting the kind of deft self-mockery that made Paul Westerberg a disciple
of Alex Chilton, Larry O. Dean puts the ‘writer’ back in singer-songwriter
with his appealing pop dossiers and laconic wit.

Not just a prolific musician, Dean is also an anthologized poet whose bibliography
is as impressive as his discography.
Cosmik Debris

Dean is known for his Dylan-esque half-sung/half-spoken delivery
of literate folk tunes with a rock backing. He can come off like Lou Reed
or Matthew Sweet, depending on the tune.
Nashville City Paper

Like most songwriters, Chicagoan Larry O. Dean was turned on by the Velvets
and Modern Lovers. Since leaving behind the pop ramblings of San Francisco
(which found him fronting The Fussbudgets and Malcontent), Dean has taken
his songwriting to a tapered perfection, crafting lyrics from blocks of ideas that
would have been lost with lesser writers. A published poet and freelance writer,
Dean's music is pulled out of any heaviness by his words, sounding a little like
a young Robyn Hitchcock.
