Daniel Cleary

Elegy for James Gerard and Other Poems for the Larger Voice, 2004

Poems by Daniel Cleary
48 pp., 5 1/2" x 8 1/2",
Saddle-stitched
ISBN: 1-933126-21-3

“The Larger Voice” speaks of “the larger view” – perspective of
inner vista and vision, more than of the draughtsman’s
parallels converging at the horizon. Cleary’s voice speaks what
his brush whispers to the eyes. Look – there’s more than glass and fruit
in the still life, more than wheat, trees, and sheep in the landscape.
The human and the divine intertwine to teach you subtly.

Author Profile

Daniel Cleary, from County Tipperary, Ireland, came to Chicago over 30 years ago.
He is known for lyric poetry and a golden singing voice. Daniel began writing
while studying painting at the Camberwell School of Art in London. The people
and the world around him inspire both poems and paintings. He has two prior
volumes of poetry: The Green Ribbon (Enright House of Ireland) and On the Root River Trail.

“‘What poet would not envy you?’ Daniel Cleary begins a poem
not in this collection, ‘Slipping the bonds of earth a while/ to sally
forth into the blue . . .’ And we do, with Daniel as he leads us
in careful form throughout the history of flight or back to simple ballooning.
‘Without a great degree of force . . .’
‘Out on a sea without a shore . . .’
We are in flight because Daniel dances us in the air with his rhymes
and gently puts us back upon the ground. This gentle poet with his lilting
song lullabies us into happy listening as we read his carefully crafted poems.”
    – John Starrs, Professor of Performance and Poetry, DePaul University

“This beguiling book puts me in mind of Dante’s tribute to the Provençal poet,
Arnaut Daniel: ‘I who weep and sing . . . / Am Arnaut.’ In these pages can be
heard the soul of a poet and those of many others.”
    – Joe Roarty, performance poet and author of Choruses I,  2005
