Review Comments:
David M. Kinchen, Huntington News Network Book Critic, September 12,
2005:
The author’s forte is crafting vivid portraits of her characters in sparse
but expressive language. . . .
Beatriz Badikian Gartler follows in the steps of Joseph Conrad and Vladimir
Nabokov,
expressive prose stylists for whom English was a second language. . . .
“Old Gloves” displays a remarkable range of emotions for such a short book.
By turns it’s humorous and horrifying, but there’s always hope that better
things are on the horizon.

Jeffery Renard Allen, Associate
Professor, Queens College,
author of Harbor and Spirits (poetry) and Rails Under
My Back (a novel).
Old Gloves is a beautifully imagined and deeply engaging novel,
which shows felt life in all of its many complexities. Written in
seemingly simple language, the narrative unfolds across several
continents with a interesting and individualized cast of characters.
In telling their stories it also provides a terse exploration of some
of the most defining events of the last century. Indeed, the novel is
a singular achievement which has something heartfelt to say to us all.
