fractaledgepress

A publisher of world-class literature
– poetry, short stories, and long fiction –
high production values at reasonable cost

Our Mission

To publish books that readers devour
that make bookstores wrestle for distribution rights
that foster readings in theaters, arenas, and stadiums
that strike with the power of divine wind
that leave you breathless and glad to be alive

fractaledgepress  profile

fractaledgepress emerged from a sense of urgency to publish good work and stop waiting for someone else to do the job. Having spent enough money in postage, reproduction, and contest fees to print a volume, I decided to create a press and contract the printing elsewhere.

Like the products of many small, independent presses, the initial works derived from the publisher's pen and keyboard. Two were solo efforts, one a collaboration. Many new projects are now available and others are under way in a new campaign: Get the Word Out! (See News and Books Sections for the latest on books available.) Most of the authors involved are Chicago writers, known and ready to be known primarily poets who perform as well as they write and write as well as they perform. There are notable exceptions in genre and geography, but all these authors are bringing new projects to light under this new publishing banner because they have seen the quality in design and production of the current list. Key to the success of this campaign will be the solution to the distribution puzzle. This nut, once safe in the cracker, is now split and shelled, thanks to:

At the moment, the division of labor is simple and clean. Writers write and have input to the layout and design of the works. Authors are not asked to contribute toward the expenses of production. This is not a vanity press – it never was. It is, however, still small. I handle book design, typesetting of manuscripts from all sources, and business with the printers.

The works published under this rubric are the real deal. Read them and be moved the way the doubters were when they called for a demonstration at the sidewalk tables, thinking they would have some fun at the expense of the aesthetic pretenders, feeling their jaws dropping as words and images gripped their hearts and thrummed their souls.

Responding to my first open-mic reading at Coffee Chicago in 2003, one of the regular participants said, "It's such a pleasure to meet and get to know people who raise the bar." Now that the new projects have begun to appear, this line is equally appropriate in describing the new works and the place of fractaledgepress in the vibrant and energetic poetry scene in Chicago.

You will not be disappointed.

You will get your money's worth.

You will tell your friends about your discovery, your new favorite writer, books, poem, the best stanza, passage, and line.
